An introduction to Samlesbury Hall.

The unused but unquiet nursery, Belgrave Hall What by any accounts is an old building replaces an even older residence in the case of Samlesbury Hall. That first hall of the D'Ewyas family suffered the pillaging of the troops of Robert the Bruce after the battle of Bannockburn and was destroyed. Today’s building was constructed in the early 1320’s after Gilbert de Southworth married Alice D’Ewyas. The Southworth family were devout Catholics and it was their pious adherence that most likely gave rise to the rumours of a ghostly grey lady haunting the hall following The Reformation. There is much evidence of the need for secrecy there during these times as several priest holes are still apparent today. But by all accounts the probable candidate for the Grey Lady is that of Mary Southworth who lost her father in her childhood and by 1616 when she was still only 13 yrs old had been married off to a protestant cleric who though mis-practice became destitute. By 1850 the hall was up for sale and was bought and leased out as a boarding school for girls, but their tenancy was short lived as by 1862 it was the property of a Joseph Harrison. He was a man who lived a lavish life and frittered all his wealth away and so not able to bear the indignation of poverty he ended up killing himself with a gun at the hall. The last resident, a local Justice of the peace occupied the hall until 1909 seemingly unconcerned about its past and certainly unconcerned about its condition as by this time the building was in dire need of much work. Under the threat of demolishment a trust comes to its rescue in 1924 and has ever since lovingly restored, kept and cared for Samlesbury Hall. Like so many locations we investigate this place has a varied history and definite mysteries, with rumours of secret tunnels and unearthed skeletons only adding to the mix! What may yet still walk within these walls may be with us too as we investigate the other side of Samlesbury, the question is... will you?
