The history of Margam Castle - Very Active Location!

The truly haunted Margam Castle, port talbot, wales at night Aghost hunting magnet stretching back 160 years Margam Castle aside Port Talbot is evocatively styled to reflect the romanticism of an earlier genteel age but that very quality seems lost now in vacant rooms where something stirs in the quiet dark hours. This fresh building on an ancient estate was the fruit of C.R.M. Talbot's desire for a new and grand home to showcase his family lineage of which he was proud but he was also a man who harboured a love of the mystique too as he incorporated secret hidden stairways within it's design? Like many great houses the meandering line of successions filtered it's ownership into other powerful families so that the house eventually found itself administered by trustees rather than by a resident family. During World War II parts of the house were requisitioned for the billeting of troops who used the Bachelors wing, Library and some outbuildings even whilst the owners visited. Eventually the trustees decided to sell Margam Castle, much to the heartbreak of the owners, the Fletcher family. A great auction took place in 1941 leaving the Castle a shell, compounded by damage done by the troops still using the house. In 1942 the estate was purchased by local magnate David M. Evans-Bevan who it appears never actually took up residence in the great house considering it to large and uncomfortable? So the neglect began. Vandals now added to its sorry state and even though efforts were made to find a new owner with a new use for the house these came to nothing. The rot continued right up until 1973 when its fortunes changed for the better. Glamorgan county council under the foresight of Lord Heycock took Margam off Evans-Bevan's hands, though he would remove some remaining fixtures as an unwelcome parting gift. The council set about the restoration work although a fire in 1977 was nearly to dash all hope completely. The extensive work means their efforts continue now under the administration of Neath Port Talbot council. We will be exploring the many rooms of this magnificent house and weather permitting also taking in the ethereal Chapter house aside the chapel on the grounds. According to staff and rumour we may not be alone as shadowy shapes have been seen and voices heard. This estate has seen murder and suicide and no doubt the drama of distant life at the castle may has left echoes of itself. We await your company to find out...
